As part of the programme to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising every school in Ireland will be presented with the Irish tricolour, our National flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation.
Sergeant David McCarney of the Irish Army visited the school on Wednesday, the 14th October to present the flag and Proclamation and to talk to the pupils about the significance of our flag and the importance of the Proclamation. He read the Proclamation to students and staff and Faye, one of our pupils read the fourth paragraph. The pupils sang the National Anthem and Hugh and Una received the presentations on behalf of the school.
Sergeant McCarney encouraged the students to spend some time to think about making up their own Proclamation to outline their own wishes for the future for Ireland and to have this ready before March, 2016. The pupils and staff were very interested in the history of the Rising and the pupils took the opportunity to question David about his life in the army.
